Germanium is gray metalloid element, the chemical symbol is Ge, belonging to the group IVA of periodic table of elements. Germanium exists in the Zinc sulfide and certain sulfide ore, as one by-product acquired from the technology of Zinc smelting. Germanium is mostly recycled as the by-product during the Zinc or Copper refined process, it's also present in the certain coal mine. (the amount is up to 1.6%). Small amount of Germanium is used for special alloy, the main applications depend on its semiconductor character. Germanium is widely used in the early semiconductor equipment, but now replaced by Silicon. It can be used as alloying agent, catalyst, phosphor and infrared equipment.
