Red phosphorus is located in the 15th position of the periodic table, the element symbol P. It is a purplish red or slightly brown amorphous powder with a luster. Density 2.34 g/cm³, heating sublimation, but at a pressure of 4300 kPa heated to 590 ℃ can be melted. Vaporization and then condensation will yield white phosphorus. Difficult to dissolve in water and CS2, ether, ammonia, etc., slightly soluble in anhydrous ethanol, non-toxic and odorless, produces white smoke when burned, smoke is toxic.

Chemical activity is worse than white phosphorus, non-luminous phosphorus is stable at room temperature, difficult to react with oxygen. Reduction is the main, 200 ℃ or more on fire (about 240 ℃). With halogen, sulfur reaction are reducing agent. Used in the production of safety matches, organic phosphorus pesticides, phosphorus bronze, etc.
